Biographic details
Since being appointed Chair of Ophthalmology at Ruhr University Bochum, the University Eye Clinic has become a major center in refractive and cataract surgery under Burkhard Dick‘s leadership and a major force in research particularly in these fields. Dick became one of the first ophthalmic surgeons in Europe to use a femtosecond laser in cataract surgery; to date almost 9.000 eyes have been operated with that technology in Bochum.

For his pioneering work, he has been awarded a number of honors like the Choyce Medal of the British Ophthalmological Society, the Gold Medal Award of the Australian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Waring Medal of the Journal of Refractive Surgery and the Visionary Award of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS). The German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) was handed over the Leonhard Klein Award for innovative developments in ophthalmic surgery in 2008. The German Ophthalmic Surgeons (DOG) awarded Dick its Gold Medal. In 2016, Burkhard Dick‘s endeavors as a researcher, educator and clinician were recognized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) with the Academy‘s Senior Achievement Award. Also in 2016 the Italian Ophthalmological Society (SOI) honored Dick with the Antonio Scarpa Medal. The journal The Ophthalmologist ranked Dick in 2018 among the 20 most noteworthy („Power List“) ophthalmologists world-wide.

Burkhard Dick is not only a well sought-after lecturer at major meetings like the annual AAO, ASCRS and ESCRS conventions but also the author of more than 350 scientific peer-reviewed publications and five books, most of them on refractive and cataract surgery but also on glaucoma, corneal disease and basic sciences in ophthalmology. Probably one of his most eminent publications has been released in early 2018: Dick is the editor of the textbook written by him and about 30 contributors, all leaders in their fields, under the titel Femtosecond Laser Surgery in Ophthalmology. It will most likely be the standard work on this topic for some time to come (Thieme Publishers, New York).

Burkhard Dick currently serves as the President of the German Society of Cataract & Refractive and Surgeons (GSCRS) for the time period from 2018 through 2020. As a clinician and teacher, he has instructed fellows from 38 different countries in state-of-the-art cataract, refractive, glaucoma and vitreoretinal surgery. He is currently also serving as President of AECOS and will thus preside over the next AECOS European meetings in Berlin and Barcelona.

Sir Nicholas Harold Lloyd Ridley (* 10. Juli 1906 in Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire; † 25.
