Born in Tiberias, Israel and educated at the Bronx High School of Science, Columbia, and Harvard, Dr. Sebag was trained in vitreous by Endre Balazs and in retina by Charles Schepens. Dr. Sebag is considered a world-leading authority on vitreous and retinal diseases. He is presently Senior Research Scientist at the Doheny Eye Institute in Pasadena and Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. As of 2022, Dr. Sebag has authored 268 academic publications and delivered an equal number of lectures on various aspects of vitreo-retinal health and disease. His Google Scholar H-index = 53, with 11,334 citations to his publications.

A 1983-84 fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and currently a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), Dr. Sebag has delivered 69 named and invited lectures throughout the world, including the 2019 Inaugural Robert Machemer Keynote lecture to the European Society of Ophthalmology [www.VMRinstitute.com/video-library/]. He has also recorded 2 lectures for the Henry Stewart Talks, based in England.

In 2005, Dr. Sebag was inducted as a member of the venerable and prestigious American Ophthalmological Society, chairing the program committee in 2016. In 2010, Dr. Sebag was selected as a Fellow of ARVO, the world’s premier eye research organization. He has received more than 2 dozen awards from national and international organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology who accorded Dr. Sebag the Senior Career Achievement Award in 2018.
