Soon-Phaik CHEE, MD, is a senior consultant and partner of Eye & Retina Surgeons where she currently practices ophthalmology. She is currently a Visiting Consultant to Singapore National Eye Center (SNEC) and National University Hospital (NUH) and also holds the position of Adjunct Professor at both the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and at the Duke NUS Medical School. In addition, Prof Chee also serves as an Adjunct Clinician Scientist and was the immediate past Group Leader of the Cataract Research Team at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. She was also the Distinguished Professor of Clinical Education in Ophthalmology at the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School (Jan 2020 to Oct 2022), and Professor at the National University of Singapore (April 2014 to Oct 2022), Singapore. She served as the immediate past head of both the Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service and Advanced Cataract Service at the SNEC.

Prof Chee’s research interests in cataract include the management of complicated cataracts and is known for inventing a number of surgical instruments for the management of complex cataract surgeries.

In the field of uveitis, she has been the President of the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation Study Group (APIISG) since 2013 and is recognized for her work on Cytomegalovirus infection of the anterior segment in the immunocompetent.

She has authored over 270 peer reviewed scientific papers and many book chapters both in complex cataract and uveitis. She serves as a member of several editorial boards including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ocular Inflammation and Immunology and Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. She was the Editor for the book ‘Emerging Infectious Uveitis’ and the guest editor for the supplementary journal to Ocular Inflammation and Immunology that collated the Epidemiology of Uveitis in Asia Pacific. She was featured among the world’s top 2% of highly-cited researchers for Ophthalmology in 2021, in a survey initiated by Stanford University, and published by Elsevier. In addition, she was recognized with Wiley Top Cited Article for 2021-2022 for her paper on Management of the subluxated crystalline lens: A review. Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology in 2022.

She is a much sought out speaker at numerous international, regional and national conferences and has made many presentations on uveitis and cataract and has delivered several named lectures and won medals for her surgeries. She has performed many ‘live surgeries’ and conducted numerous instruction courses locally and internationally. She was the immediate past director of fellowships in the SNEC and has trained a large number of international, regional and local fellows in Uveitis and Cataract over the years. In 2000, she was given the Best Teacher Award in SNEC and in 2005, she became an Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Certified Educator (A.C.E). She was conferred by SingHealth, the Outstanding Clinician 2011 Award and the Singapore Health Quality Service Award 2014, 2018 & 2022 (Gold) for her significant contributions to national healthcare. In 2018, she was elected as a member of the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club and also received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement award. In 2019, she was admitted as a council member of the Academy of Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO). In 2021, she was awarded Outstanding Faculty Award for Residency in SingHealth Excels (RiSE) and Asia Pacific Association of Ophthalmologists Senior Achievement Award in 2023.
